Southwest Virginia Chihuahua does not intentionally breed for “Micro” or “Micro-Toy” puppies. Adult size cannot be guaranteed. Occasionally, an exceptionally small puppy may occur naturally within a litter.

These puppies have very limited body reserves. Missing a meal, stress, chilling, illness, or overexertion can cause blood sugar to fall rapidly and the puppy's body can crash. Warning signs may include weakness, unusual sleepiness, wobbling, trembling, glassy eyes, refusal to eat, collapse, seizure activity, or unconsciousness. Immediate veterinary care may be required.

An exceptionally small puppy may require feeding approximately every two hours, including overnight, along with weight checks, temperature control, restricted activity, close supervision, and an available backup caregiver. The puppy will remain with us for an additional two to four weeks beyond the normal go-home schedule, or longer if the puppy is not developmentally ready.

Because of the added time, feedings, monitoring, supplies, and intensive care, an additional $2,500 small-puppy care charge will be added. Exceptionally small, Micro, and Micro-Toy puppies—and the additional care charge—are not eligible for financing and must be paid according to the written placement terms before transfer.

These puppies are excluded from our voluntary one-year congenital and hereditary Health Guarantee, except for rights that cannot legally be waived. They are more vulnerable to falls, rough handling, larger animals, dehydration, temperature instability, delayed development, and other serious complications. Their lifespan may be shorter or less predictable than that of a normally developing Chihuahua.

They may be adorable, but they are not appropriate for every home. Placement depends on the puppy's welfare, the applicant's schedule, emergency preparation, handling environment, and ability to provide continuous care.
